The Algendar barranco is the most important geographical feature of the Miocene plateau of southern Menorca, boasting great natural and scenic beauty. This barranco forms the boundary between the municipal districts of Ferreries and Ciutadella. From Ferreries, you can visit it by following the main road and taking the second turn on the left, which leads to a local path that allows vehicle access to the very mouth of the barranco. The excursion must then continue on foot. The abundance of water and the unique orographic configuration, sheltered from the strong tramuntana winds so characteristic of the winter season, make the terrain of the barranco very suitable for growing fruits and vegetables. Its oranges are famous. The richness of the fauna and flora of Algendar has established this territory as a natural reserve of great ecological value and has sensitized the population to the need to avoid urban development projects that would end the natural habitat of some protected animal species that wander among its rocks and sharp cliffs. Crossing the barranco, you reach the beach of Cala Galdana, although the gradual abandonment of agricultural activity has made the last section of the path impassable. A stream of fresh, crystal-clear water crosses the valley, collecting rainwater from the surrounding slopes until it flows into the river at the Cala. Popular literature has created numerous legends and myths. "Sa nuvia d'Algendar" is undoubtedly the best known. It narrates the adventures of a young farm girl who, one full-moon night, was kidnapped by a Moor who had fallen in love with her and took her captive to the lands of the Moors. Popular tradition says that in these beautiful surroundings, the gardens of the Almogarive of Santa Agueda existed in an era prior to 1287, in times of Muslim rule.
