Urbanizations South of Ciutadella

*Exploring Menorca: The area of the urbanizations of the South of Ciutadella*

Cala´n Bosch, here we must make a clarification so that the different areas of this place are understood. The beach is a straight inlet of about 80 meters with fine white sands and is located to one side of the urbanization, which continues to grow in the direction of the neighboring Son Xoriguer and which will eventually join together, surrounding it completely. However, where the growth of the urbanization has been most felt is around an interior and artificial lake, distant about two hundred meters from the rocky coast of the island, joined like an umbilical cord by a canal that has been seriously worked by man to allow the passage of boats from inside the lake to the open sea and vice versa. In this way, a site that is highly sheltered from the swell on days of bad weather is obtained. If we add to this the convenience of the infrastructure for tourists in the surroundings and the existence of good beaches, it is not surprising that the degree of occupation is high, especially if one can also take nautical excursions to the idyllic virgin coves of this area of the coast, located only a few miles from The Lake; in fact, one can rent boats or take the “golondrina” cruises with several departures daily.

The “Lake of Cala´n Bosch” or “The Marina” as this area is known, must have the highest concentration of restaurants around a sheet of water in all of Menorca. It is a colorful display of architectural and ornamental styles that tries to attract visitors to taste the most varied menus and to watch the shows, all with the setting of the tiny lake crowded with boats that have returned to take shelter at sunset, with a good number of moorings for transients.

Son Xoriguer is a large sandy area that is at the end of the path of the urbanized beaches of the south, about ten kilometers from Ciutadella. Its large beach surface is arranged facing the open sea. Along the right side of the beach, there are no buildings, giving it a more natural air; that and the presence of some rocks peeking out in the water give it a bit more grace. It is also the point where the coastal path, known as “Camí de Cavalls”, reappears, which travels through a large part of Menorca with the exception of the urbanized coves that have absorbed it. This stretch of the path allows us to take a long route to other coves, with little interest, until we arrive at Son Saura and the virgin coves that follow it, but keep in mind that the stretch is several kilometers long.

The urbanization, which is one of the veterans, has hotels, blocks of apartments for tourism and permanent residents, a good collection of villas among palm trees or pine areas, and all the complementary services for the enjoyment of the tourist: car and motorcycle rental, and even bicycles, normal or family tricycles. The area is very flat, which facilitates travel by pedals; it is so flat that it was the area that Ciutadella offered for the site of the Menorca airport. You can also rent boats of all kinds for sightseeing or practicing water sports. The beach has beach bars and rental services for umbrellas, lounge chairs, windsurf boards, etc.

The coastal area has stretches with cliffs that are not very high, which facilitates quiet walks without great physical effort.

Access: it is the same as the Santandria Area.

Access: From Ciutadella, via the southern beaches road, secondary road PM721, which starts next to Cala Degollador. At 2 km is Cala Santandria, at 3 km is Cala Blanca, at 7 km is the Artrutx Lighthouse, at 8 km is the Lake and the beach of Cala'n Bosch, to finish 2 km further on in the Urbanization and beach of Son Xoriguer.
