Son Catlar

Menorca: Archaeology Son Catlar

The archaeological sanctuary of Son Catlar is located about 8 km from the road connecting Ciutadella with the beaches of Son Saura, on the south coast. It is the largest talayotic settlement preserved in the Balearic Islands. The archaeological area covers an area of about 6 hectares and is surrounded by a 1 km long cyclopean wall. The wall does not have a uniform construction, but rather presents some walls and towers from the classical period, noticeable by the different treatment of the stone.

The settlement contains various rooms, five talaiots (defense and territorial control towers), some located inside and others contained within the perimeter of the wall, and a taula enclosure (religious building). We do not know when habitation began in the area, but we do know that the settlement ended its existence at the end of the Roman period.
