Menorca: Archaeology of the Cala Morell Necropolis

It is a small natural port, open on the north coast of the municipality of Ciutadella, 7 km from this city. In the rocky walls that form the small ravine that ends at the cove, a set of caves was opened at the end of the Bronze Age and during the Iron Age, which form one of the largest and most spectacular prehistoric necropolises on the island.

The interior of the largest caves aims to imitate the circular houses of the talayotic period. There are caves with a simple plan and others in which there are differences in level and free-standing columns carved into the rock itself to mark different spaces. The most spectacular cave of all presents classic architectural motifs in relief on its facade. Despite being a type of burial very frequent in the Mediterranean, in Menorca, it acquires great magnificence. The best examples are found precisely in Cala Morell and in Cales Coves (Alaior).
